Hermann Hesse is one of my favorite writers. Most of his work was written in the first half of the 20th century and deals with the relationship between opposites: the secular and the religious, light and dark, knowledge and ignorance.

David Foster Wallace wrote a great piece on fiction writing that encompassed the topic of irony and self-reference within media. It's a work that helped me organize my feelings about the current state of American youth culture.
